Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church
The Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church exists to glorify God through a ministry based upon the truth, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love of Jesus Christ.
“To know Him and to make Him known” is the two-fold purpose behind everything we do. Although far from perfect, this purpose radically transforms our lives, and our families, making this church a place of welcome, hope, and healing.
The Christian life is a great adventure meant to be shared by all those who know and love the Lord Jesus Christ.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.”
2 Corinthians 2:14
A Brief History
The Dickson congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized under the leadership of the Reverend A.H. Manley and the Revered J.F. Lackey. At first, the fledgling congregation met in the home of Miss Betty Shearon, one of the seventeen charter members. The new congregation was received into the Charlotte Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on October 6, 1899.
The congregation’s first building was located on North Main Street, near the site of the present First United Methodist Church.
In 1924-1925, the building was sold and another built on a new location -West Fifth and Bryant Streets. The congregation worshipped at this location until 1986.
On May 18,1986, the congregation moved to its third and present building. This facility is located on a four and one-half acre site along Highway Seventy between Shady Hollow Road and Park Circle.
Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian continues to minister to needs in this community through numerous outreach efforts. Each Fall, there is a Coat/Clothing Give-Away for all sizes and ages. Each year, the Angel Tree Program makes it possible for many families who would have very little, or nothing, to better enjoy the Christmas Season. We also participate in The Samaritan Purse Christmas Shoe Box Ministry which sends Christmas gifts along with the gospel message to thousands of children around the world. Our Manna Ministry continues to provide food for those who are hungry. Our Caring Ministry provides assistance for those seeking help with utilities and other immediate needs. These ministries are in addition to those we support through the Cumberland Presbyterian Denominational Board of Missions. Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church is certainly a Church that reaches out to its community, and beyond, with the Love of Christ.
Christian nurture is provided through an active Sunday School Program with classes for all ages. We also enjoy very active children and youth ministries.
The present Pastor is Reverend Robert D. Truitt who began serving the congregation in December 2002.
Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church is a pastor’s dream come true. It is a congregation of people who love the Lord and who live their faith each day in the community. Many of our people are involved in local ministries outside the church.
We are also a very active, busy church. There is always something happening at the church. There is a constant flow of people in and out every day. Because of these things, Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian is the most welcoming community of believers. When visitors worship with us, no one goes away feeling they have been unnoticed. We believe Christ died for all persons and we strive to treat everyone with love and respect.
Ours is a church that loves and genuinely cares about each other. When a need of any kind is recognized there will be a host of folks ready to do their part to meet the need. Jesus said that people will know we are His disciples if we have a love for one another. Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church is a church full of Jesus’ disciples.
I have been blessed to serve this congregation for seventeen years. It has also been a blessing to me to serve the Lord with our Associate Pastor Rev. Dean Guye. He is a true man of God and I value his wisdom and friendship. I look forward to continuing the journey in the future and participating in the blessings God has in store for His faithful at Dickson Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Thanks to those of you who are on this journey with us. I love and appreciate you all.
Your fellow traveler,
Current Ministry Involvement
Our congregation is involved in numerous ministries both inside and outside the church. We support the mission efforts of our denomination through the denominational Mission Ministry Team. A number of our members have participated in hands-on mission endeavors both at home and abroad.
We financially support local ministries like the Dickson County Help Center. We have members who volunteer both there and at Care Net Pregnancy Center.
Meals on Wheels operates out of our facilities five days each week. Several of our members deliver meals.
Developmental Services use our facilities each Tuesday to meet and enjoy fellowship.
The American Red Cross holds a blood drive in our gym every other month.
We offer financial and staff support to the Child Evangelism Fellowship which meets in one of the schools in our county.
Explorers Bible Fellowship, a community-wide program, meets at our church each week during the school year. This program is under the direction of one of our members, Joyce Guye.
We support Gideons International. At last count seven members of our church are Gideons. They hold their weekly prayer meetings along with other organizational meetings here.
For the last several years we have provided lunch for participants in the Run for the Wall. These are mostly Vietnam veterans who are on a journey to Washington, D.C. and the Memorial Wall on Memorial Day. There are usually more than three hundred of them.
Our Church budgets a certain amount for our Manna Ministry. This is used for needs within our community, i.e. gas, water, and electric assistance to those who are temporarily struggling to pay those bills. Our CPWM (Women’s Ministry) provides assistance stocking our food pantry for those needing assistance with food items.
The CPWM also is involved with a number of mission endeavors. They hold a Fall Festival each year to fund these projects.
Other Items of Interest
We offer three worship services each week, Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday evening.
Although many Sunday Schools around the world are suffering declining enrollments, we have a very active Sunday school with classes for all ages. A nursery is also provided.
Our Church has an outstanding, large and active Youth group as well as a large and very active children’s ministry. We are so blessed to have such a large number of both children and youth.
We have an active choir under the most capable direction of Jacky Clifton. The choir provides a beautiful and meaningful Christmas Cantata each year.
There is also a very active senior ministry – the CP Classics. Leadership for this group is provided by Bro. Guye and his wife Joyce. They do a remarkable job of keeping this group involved.
As you can see we are a very active Congregation. We have something for everyone. Most importantly we proclaim the gospel (The Good News) most people believe to be true – “The Whosoever Will Gospel.” “….And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely” Rev. 22:17.
